Job Summary The Supervisor, Mechanical – Locomotive is responsible for handling the day‑to‑day operations of the terminal through unionized staff to ensure locomotive inspection, maintenance and repair work is performed safely and efficiently. The role may also be stationed in the Mechanical Operations Center to coordinate the routing, assembling and disassembling of locomotives for trains. Ultimately, leading the day‑to‑day operations of a 24/7 function, the role is critical to ensuring availability, reliability and dwell targets are met to achieve CN’s commitment to its customers.Safety Orientation, Compliance and ImplementationCoach and train employees on safe and productive work proceduresOversee Online Locomotive Failure Investigation and follow‑up to include corrective actionBuild safety compliance and improve safety results through regular efficiency tests and safety walk‑abouts; provide positive and constructive feedback to subordinates and act on non‑compliant behaviourCreate, train, audit and implement standard operating proceduresEnsure safe operation as measured by accidents, incidents and employee injuriesSupport the onboarding and training activities of new employeesEnsure Performance Monitoring Compliance Rules (PMRC) targets, expectations and objectives are met and monitor completion and compliance accordinglyRespond immediately and take corrective actions regarding raised safety concernsEnsure active involvement in Workplace Location Joint Apprentice Committee (WLJAC)Problem Solving and Decision MakingMaintain teamwork and order among staff, contractors and internal clients by acting with a sense of urgency to respond to issues as they may ariseUse CN data to analyze locomotive inspections, repair and maintenance requirements to ensure fleet reliabilityMake final decisions on locomotive repairs and act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the repair and maintenance of locomotivesRespond to trouble‑calls for assigned region and delegate proper responses accordinglyPlanning and Organizing WorkloadCertify that repair, inspection and productivity standards are in accordance with the service planPrioritize the repair of locomotives against multiple demands to reduce dwell times in order to increase locomotive reliabilityDrive locomotive fleet reliability by ensuring direct reports are adhering to preventative maintenance schedule and repairs to increase locomotive availabilityEnsure overall utilization is maximized, as measured by productivity, attendance and labour costsGeneral Leadership and Supervision of Union Workforce and TowerCommunicate company goals and policies to create a clear understanding of direction and expectationsEvaluate employee performance and review performance expectations, actual performance, and overall performance ratings for reportsConduct investigations per collective agreement and issue discipline in collaboration with function’s Leadership teamDevelop and sustain the right employee behaviours with feedback, recognition, reinforcement and coachingEnsure direct reports validate payroll and time‑off requestsOversee accounts payable by paying and authorizing invoicesSupervise, direct and coordinate activities of workers engaged in makeup and breakup of trains and switching inbound and outbound trafficAssign locomotives to trains to obtain the most efficient use of equipment based on tonnage of freight and scheduled departurePrepare routes, locomotive schedules for preventative maintenance and destinations in proximity to designated facilities and minimize cost of transfer to service siteWorking Conditions The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments in various environmental conditions with rotating shifts (days, afternoons, midnights) covering the 24/7 operation.
