Overview As a member of the military, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Officers maintain and support all Army equipment, and the land‑based equipment of the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force. They are commissioned members of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Branch of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Officers lead the soldier technicians who keep equipment in top condition and work in every equipment life‑cycle phase, from design, evaluation and acquisition through in‑service support to eventual disposal. Their duties involve leading staff and providing specialized engineering knowledge. They lead a team of highly skilled technicians of the Vehicle, Weapon, Electronic‑Optronic and Materials occupations. Work environment Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Officers experience unique adventures and challenges that come with working in different environments. Officers are employed at bases and garrisons across Canada and on deployments worldwide. In the field or on deployment they may work outdoors. They are first posted generally to a large workshop, where they lead a group of up to 30 technicians who maintain a wide range of equipment. Under senior officers they make technical, administrative and training decisions for their team. Regular Force members are assigned to base after training, with possible relocations. Primary Reserve members are assigned to a specific reserve unit; they typically work one night per week and some weekends, with potential for full‑time employment. Entry plans Direct Entry Options Paid Education Options Applicants with a university degree that meets CAF criteria may be placed directly into the required on‑the‑job training program following basic training and military officer qualification training. Regular Officer Training Plan: The CAF provides full‑time salary, medical and dental care, and vacation time with full pay in exchange for service after completing a bachelor degree program through the Royal Military College System. Candidates may also attend other Canadian universities on a case‑by‑case basis. Training Basic officer training (12 weeks) at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School covers military knowledge, leadership, regulations, weapons handling and first aid, with a focus on physical fitness. Followed by second‑language training (2–9 months) as offered. After basic training, officers attend Infantry School at the Combat Training Centre and then advance to specialized training in maintenance engineering for combat and special‑purpose vehicles, weapons, electronic‑optronic sensors and communications systems. Final stages of training cover tactical deployment of a Maintenance Company, planning and workload management, and personnel administration. Officers may then pursue specialised courses such as Ammunition Technical Officer, Nuclear Engineering, Guided Weapons System, and Advanced Ammunition Engineering. Part‑time options This position is available for part‑time employment with the Primary Reserve in select locations across Canada. Reserve Force members serve part time at an Air Force Wing or local community unit, may combine with study or civilian employment, and are paid during training. They are not required to relocate, though they may volunteer for deployment or relocation. Partial‑time officers may also serve full‑time in some units and receive 92.8% of Regular Force pay, a benefits package and pension contribution. #J-18808-Ljbffr
