Opportunity We are seeking a strategic, forward‑thinking, and people‑centered Underwriting Manager to lead our Commercial Insurance Underwriting team. In this critical leadership role, you will champion underwriting excellence, guide team performance, and support profitable portfolio growth. What you will be doing Leadership & Team Development Lead, manage, and coach a team of Commercial Underwriters to ensure high performance, accuracy, and consistency. Provide training, mentorship, and ongoing development, including onboarding and performance reviews. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and results‑driven team culture. Underwriting Oversight & Portfolio Management Oversee underwriting decisions, ensuring risk assessments align with guidelines, appetite, and profitability targets. Review complex or escalated submissions and provide expert guidance to team members. Monitor performance metrics, pricing adequacy, and market trends to adjust underwriting strategies. Operational Excellence Manage daily operations, workflow distribution, service levels, and turnaround times to meet broker and business expectations. Implement process improvements and ensure adherence to underwriting policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Collaborate with Claims, Actuarial Services, and Finance to support strategic planning. Broker & Stakeholder Engagement Cultivate and maintain strong broker relationships and respond to escalations professionally. Partner with brokers to negotiate terms and assess risk. Represent underwriting in cross‑functional initiatives and internal leadership discussions. What you bring to the team Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, insurance or related field; equivalent industry experience will also be considered Minimum of eight (8) years of Commercial Underwriting experience, with at least two (2) years in a leadership or supervisory role Professional designations such as CIP, ACIP or FCIP are considered strong assets Strong knowledge Commercial P&C lines, risk assessment, and underwriting principles Proven ability to lead teams, manage conflict and make sound underwriting decisions under pressure Excellent communication, relationship‑building and organizational skills High level of attention to detail, organization skills and ability to prioritize tasks High degree of emotional intelligence and empathy How you will succeed To support a smooth transition and set the foundation for long term success, the following outcomes outline what the Underwriting Manager is expected to achieve within their first three months in the role: Role Relationship Building: Establish strong, trusting relationships with the team, broker partners, and key internal stakeholders. Operational Ownership: Independently manage daily workflows, service standards, and escalations with consistency and sound judgment. Process Improvements: Identify meaningful opportunities to refine underwriting processes, enhance efficiency, or strengthen risk selection. Underwriting Judgement: Confidently review complex files and make decisions aligned with authority levels and profitability goals.
