Job Description The position of Claims Litigation Counsel at Definity involves independent carriage of tort litigation files, including trials, appeals, contested motions, cross‑examinations, discovery examinations, mediations, and the preparation of court documents. The role requires reviewing and analyzing evidence, interviewing witnesses, conducting out‑of‑court examinations or questionings, engaging and instructing experts, and providing client reporting and legal opinions. The Counsel will negotiate settlements, draft settlement documents, and delegate tasks to support staff while maintaining a varied litigation practice covering property damage, construction, bodily injury, and subrogated claims.What to expectIndependent carriage of tort litigation files, attending trials and appeals, managing contested motions, cross‑examinations, discovery examinations, and mediations.Preparation of court documents, review and analysis of evidence, interview of witnesses, and out‑of‑court examinations or questionings.Engagement of medical, financial, technical experts, and third parties for surveillance and support.Client reporting, legal opinions, strategy recommendation, settlement negotiation, and drafting of settlement documents.Delegation of tasks to support staff while maintaining overall case direction.Experience with property damage, construction, bodily injury, and subrogated claims from inception to trial.Advisory role to Definity’s Claims department on litigation strategy and claims litigation.What you bring2–7 years of post‑call civil litigation experience, preferably in insurance litigation or in‑house legal provision.Experience handling complex claims, contested motions, and/or appeals.Interest and ability in oral and written advocacy; trial experience preferred but not required.Ability to manage a full caseload with primary carriage.Exposure to property damage, construction, and/or subrogated claims is an asset.High degree of personal ethics, integrity, and responsibility with the ability to handle sensitive information.Assertiveness in practice, balanced by reasonableness and forthrightness.Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.Excellent negotiation and facilitation skills with effective presentation capabilities.Sound judgment and problem‑solving ability in ambiguous situations, providing meaningful advice and recommendations.Team player adaptable to change and able to perform under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage conflicting priorities.Comfortable with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Caselines, and practice management systems.Law degree from an accredited law school (LLB or Juris Doctor) and licensed by the Law Society of Ontario.High proficiency with English for service to internal and external customers across Canada.Successful clearance of background checks, including criminal checks and leadership references.Salary Range $108,700 – $158,700BenefitsHybrid work schedule for most roles.Company share ownership program.Incentive program offering discretionary incentive plans.Pension and savings programs with company‑matched RRSP contributions.Paid volunteer days and company matching on charitable donations.Educational resources, tuition assistance, and paid time off for exam study.Wellness and recognition programs.Discounts on products and services.#J-18808-Ljbffr
