The position is located in Ottawa, Ontario and the successful candidate must reside in the geographic proximity of the National Capital region. The Position Under the general direction of the National President, the UTE Web/Communications Officer: Develops, implements and maintains the UTE internal and external websites, applications and communications materials; Develops appropriate communications material for distribution, posting and circulating in various media channels; Ensures that the design, presentation and content of the website contributes to UTE’s communications objectives and promotes UTE’s positioning as a progressive organization; Provides advice and recommendations to the UTE Management Team to ensure that UTE’s website is current, relevant, user-friendly and easily accessible; Coordinates with the National President, the Communications Committee and staff to develop, direct, create and recommend the placement of website graphics, navigational layout, design, content and function to enhance the appearance, layout and flow of the website; Collaborates with the UTE Management Team and/or UTE Communications Committee with respect to the development of website and social media strategies; Updates database information, web content and writes captions where needed; Improves the visibility of the UTE website on search engine search results; Creates and monitors the UTE membership e‑mail lists, responds to enquiries where appropriate and distributes UTE web material to subscribers; Develops, creates and tests new web applications and databases; Installs and configures web site server applications; Monitors the web server to ensure performance and security and takes appropriate measures to prevent, identify security issues; Ensures that all web material is backed up; Researches and evaluates new technologies and products and recommends the acquisition of these technologies, products and outside service providers; Communicates the capabilities of the web and web‑based applications and coaches users in their use; Provides a quarterly report to the National President’s Executive Council; Participates as technical advisor to the Communications Committee; Liaises with service providers with respect to communications needs and the development of products and services; Assists with the design of printed publication materials, as requested; Under the general direction of the National President or other authorized managerial representatives, posts information on and monitors UTE social media accounts; Creates, develops and implements media pieces for campaigns including web, print or video elements; Takes photographs at UTE national conferences and conventions, including the Presidents’ Conference, the National Equity Conference, and the National Health and Safety Conference, edits photos and posts photos on the UTE website and other social media outlets; Replaces the IT Officer and performs designated IT duties during their absence in accordance with established procedures, including changing passwords, adding users, creating Teams groups and accounts, adding members to email groups, performing security backups, releasing filtered emails, performing maintenance, addressing issues, and other related duties as required. Qualifications: Post‑secondary diploma in Web Development, Web Programming, Digital Media or related field, plus a minimum of 3‑5 years of progressively responsible experience, preferably in a union, non‑profit, or public sector environment. Thorough knowledge and expertise using the Drupal content management system, web applications, social media platforms as well as mass email and data analytic tools; hands‑on experience with HTML, CSS, PHP and APIs; experience with Adobe Creative Cloud including Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro and InDesign; experience with SQL database management; experience with email marketing platforms (e.g., MailChimp, Constant Contact) to manage mailing lists and distribute content. Basic knowledge of IT support tasks, such as managing user accounts, performing system backups, and maintaining secure IT systems in a Microsoft environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and French, with the ability to tailor messaging for different audiences and media. Knowledge of the structure of UTE and the PSAC; sound judgment, initiative, reliability and the ability to work independently. Ability to remain current on emerging information technology trends.
