Trinity Presbyterian Church in Oshawa is a vibrant community of faith within the Presbyterian Church in Canada. We are seeking a dedicated Music Director to lead our musical worship and nurture our congregation’s participation in the expression of faith through singing, choir/praise band leadership, and instrumental accompaniment. Our music program includes both secular and sacred components, utilizing piano, keyboard, electric organ, and other instrumental and technological accompaniments as appropriate. Principal Responsibilities:Provide music at all regular Sunday morning services of the Church as well as any other special services identified by the Minister(s) and/or Worship Committee. Consult and cooperate with the Ministers and Worship committee for music at the weekly Sunday service and other special services (e.g., Good Friday, Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday). Conduct weekly choir and/or praise band rehearsals on days and times mutually acceptable to both parties. Select suitable music for the choir or praise band. Provide leadership for the congregation for the singing of hymns, songs, and responses after consultation with the minister(s). Be available to play at occasional church social events and assist the congregation in using and setting up audio-visual equipment (microphones, speakers, etc.) as needed. Consult with the Worship committee when regular maintenance of organ and piano are required. Serve as an ex officio member of the Worship Committee of Session, attending meetings at least on a quarterly basis. Manage absences by securing and reimbursing a qualified substitute musician. The Music Director has the right of first refusal for all weddings and funerals in the church building and negotiates the extra fee directly with the parties concerned. Skills and Characteristics Sought:High level of competency playing the piano; experience playing the organ is strongly desired. Experience with other instruments is an asset. Experience in leading a vocal choir; familiarity or experience with a handbell choir is an asset. Strong interpersonal skills. An understanding of Christian liturgy and openness to contemporary liturgical forms. Sensitivity to and awareness of the capabilities of the congregation, choir, praise band, and guest musicians. Ability to bring a spirit of celebration and praise to worship. Salary range $12,000 to $17,000 annually, and is commensurate with experience.
