Project Manager - Structural Steel Fabrication Position Summary The Project Manager oversees structural steel fabrication projects from initial award through fabrication, delivery, and final close-out. This role serves as the central point of coordination between clients, engineers, detailing teams, fabrication personnel, and subcontractors to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with contract requirements. Key Responsibilities Project Management Manage projects from kickoff through completion. Review contracts, drawings, and specifications to define scope, risks, and requirements. Develop, maintain, and track project schedules and milestones. Monitor budgets, costs, and overall project profitability. Coordination & Communication Act as the main point of contact for stakeholders, including contractors, engineers, and internal teams. Coordinate with detailing teams to ensure shop drawings meet specifications. Manage RFIs, submittals, and approvals with the Engineer of Record (EOR). Lead internal meetings with production, procurement, and logistics teams. Fabrication & Production Coordination Align fabrication schedules with production teams. Ensure timely procurement and delivery of materials (e.g., plates, beams, HSS). Track fabrication progress and resolve technical challenges. Coordinate finishing processes such as galvanizing and painting. Procurement & Logistics Oversee material purchasing and subcontracted services. Manage shipping schedules, transportation, and site deliveries. Ensure compliance with shipping regulations, including cross-border requirements when applicable. Cost Control & Change Management Track costs and prepare financial reports. Identify, evaluate, and manage change orders and claims. Review and approve supplier and subcontractor invoices. Quality & Compliance Ensure adherence to applicable industry standards (e.g., CSA, AISC, AWS). Coordinate inspections, including non-destructive testing (NDT) when required. Support quality assurance and documentation processes. Risk Management Identify potential project risks and implement mitigation strategies. Resolve technical, scheduling, and contractual issues as they arise. Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation is considered an asset. Experience Minimum 5 years of experience in structural steel fabrication or construction project management. Experience with steel detailing, fabrication processes, and erection coordination. Technical Knowledge Strong understanding of structural steel drawings and specifications. Familiarity with fabrication methods such as welding, cutting, galvanizing, and painting. Knowledge of relevant industry standards (CSA, AISC, AWS). Software Skills Experience with tools such as Tekla Structures / Tekla EPM, Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Project. Key Skills Strong organizational and project management capabilities. Effective Communication And Negotiation Skills (English And French Preferred) Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. High attention to detail with a focus on cost control. Work Environment Primarily office-based with regular interaction with fabrication and production teams.
