Overview As a member of the military, an Infantry Officer performs a wide range of duties, from commanding and leading soldiers as part of a team to occupying various staff positions involving planning, training, intelligence, logistics and personnel administration. Commissioned members of Canada’s Infantry regiments – belonging to the Combat Arms – can operate anywhere in the world, in any environment including Arctic tundra, mountains, jungle or desert, and in any combination of arms such as parachute, airmobile and amphibious operations. The primary role of Infantry during operations is to be involved in combat. Work Environment Infantry Officers experience the unique challenges of working outdoors in various weather conditions. When not in the field, they are responsible for garrison duties that include physical training, office work, supervision, staff instruction and outdoor field and weapons training. Office work focuses on personnel administration and the maintenance of weapons, equipment and vehicles. These duties normally occur during regular working hours. Infantry Officers are initially posted to one of three regiments: Royal Canadian Regiment – Petawawa, Ontario or Gagetown, New Brunswick Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry – Edmonton, Alberta or Shilo, Manitoba Royal 22e Régiment – Valcartier, Quebec City, Laval or Saint‑Hyacinthe, Quebec Entry Plans Direct Entry Options Paid Education Options Applicants who already hold a university degree will have their academic program evaluated against the CAF criteria and may be placed directly into the required on‑the‑job training program following basic training. Regular Officer Training Plan requires a university degree; successful recruits are paid to complete a bachelor’s degree program within the Royal Military College System and receive a full‑time salary, medical and dental care, vacation time and full pay in exchange for service. Candidates may also be accepted into other Canadian universities on a case‑by‑case basis. Training After enrollment, basic officer training is conducted at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint‑Jean‑sur‑Richelieu, Quebec, for 12 weeks. Topics include general military knowledge, leadership principles, CAF regulations, basic weapons handling and first aid. A rigorous physical fitness program is also a vital part of basic training. Following basic training, second‑language training may be offered. The required Infantry training is conducted at the Infantry School in Gagetown, New Brunswick, culminating in the command and lead of an Infantry Platoon. Officers gain proficiency in command from a Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) III, modern infrared and night vision systems and specialty weapons. Successful officers are posted to an operational Infantry Battalion to command a Platoon. Specialized courses such as Patrol Pathfinder, Basic Parachutist and Free‑Fall may be offered to selected officers. Part‑Time Options This position is available for part‑time employment with the Primary Reserve at certain locations across Canada. Reserve members serve part time at a military unit in their community and may work while attending school or a civilian job. They are paid during training, are not required to relocate, but may volunteer for deployment on a military mission within or outside Canada. Reserve officers receive 92.8 % of Regular Force rates, a reasonable benefits package and may qualify to contribute to a pension plan.
