This is a pivotal and exciting time in our journey, as we bring this life‑changing technology to patients! We are excited to add a Senior/Staff Mechanical Designer to our team. This role focuses on improving the current product design, developing new manufacturing processes and equipment, and designing novel medical devices. In this position, a hands‑on approach to prototyping, creativity, mechanical detail design skills, and theory‑based analytical skills will enable success. An essential trait is the ability to transform concepts into final designs. This is a hybrid work arrangement located in Burnaby, BC. Responsibilities Collecting and clarifying design input requirements for mechanical design projects Brainstorming and concept evaluation activities: using hands‑on skills to build proof‑of‑concept models to evaluate design ideas quickly and efficiently Transforming concepts into working prototypes using in‑house manufacturing capabilities for bench‑top and in‑vivo testing Designing and building machinery and jigs for Kardium's on‑site manufacturing plant Ensuring a smooth transition of design to manufacturing by supporting risk management, regulatory affairs, verification testing, and training of manufacturing staff Creation and maintenance of engineering design documentation, including engineering drawings, work or maintenance instructions, and test reports Travelling occasionally within and outside North America Providing mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and designers, fostering skill development and ensuring high‑quality work Lead or contribute to design reviews, sharing expertise to enhance team outcomes and ensure design robustness Act as a technical resource and subject matter expert for the mechanical design team, supporting problem‑solving and innovation Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, such as R&D, quality assurance, and manufacturing, to align objectives and drive projects forward Qualifications A bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering, or an equivalent mix of education and experience, coupled with previous practical engineering experience in a product development environment 7+ years of mechanical design experience, preferably in the medical device or other regulated industries, with experience in the full product development lifecycle Ideally prior engineering experience in bringing a product to market with high volumes and developing design and testing requirements of medical devices Previous professional experience with precision mechanics and a high level of familiarity with machine shop tools, and parametric modelling software (SolidWorks) Familiarity with regulatory standards such as ISO 13485, FDA QSR, or similar, and experience supporting risk management processes Proven ability to mentor and guide junior engineers and designers Exposure to different manufacturing techniques Excellent written and verbal communication and technical documentation skills The ability to effectively manage changing priorities and requirements Compensation The total cash compensation range (base salary + 5% Retirement Saving contribution) is listed. Pay will be determined based on numerous relevant factors including education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, and business needs. $110,000 – $151,000 CAD annually As a permanent employee, you will also participate in Kardium’s stock option plan.
