The Senior Automation Engineer designs, integrates, programs, and improves automated manufacturing systems to ensure safe, efficient, and high quality production. This role leads automation projects including new equipment launches, PLC and robotic optimization, and advanced technology integration. The engineer collaborates with cross functional teams, contractors, and suppliers to deliver projects on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards while driving reliability, lean initiatives, and plant performance. Responsibilities Lead automation cell design, integration, and commissioning including new equipment launches, process validation, and production readiness. Program, troubleshoot, and optimize PLC and robotic systems including Allen Bradley ControlLogix, Siemens S7, Fanuc, ABB (Omnicore), and Motoman to maximize uptime, reliability, and performance. Manage automation and engineering projects by coordinating engineers, contractors, technicians, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to meet cost, timing, and performance targets. Analyze equipment performance data including failures, mean time between failures, downtime, and labour and material costs, and implement reliability and cost reduction improvements using maintenance tracking systems. Design and implement advanced automation technologies including vision systems, laser marking, barcode and serialization systems, and data collection and integration solutions. Develop mechanical and system designs for automated cells including layouts, end of arm tooling, material handling, conveyance, and equipment specifications. Select and specify equipment, materials, standards, and measurement methods while interpreting electrical schematics, blueprints, pneumatic and hydraulic drawings, and technical specifications. Drive continuous improvement and Lean manufacturing initiatives by supporting LPS requirements, 5S standards, and departmental performance KPI achievement aligned to the Stepping Stool of Success strategy. Maintain and advance technical expertise by staying current on emerging automation technologies, networking including Ethernet and TCP IP, and engineering best practices while mentoring and supporting cross functional teams. Academic/Educational Requirements University degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related engineering discipline and eligibility for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario or similar three year diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, or Automation Technology or Industrial Electrician 442A Certificate of Qualification or equivalent combination of technical education and related experience. Required Skills/Experience 7 – 10 years experience in automation system design and programming including SolidWorks and AutoCAD and completion of relevant automation or equipment manufacturer training. Working Conditions 40 hours per week In office, Production area as required.
