Location In-Person — Hamilton, Ontario When Ongoing - Start Anytime Schedule Immediately About This Opportunity Wellwood's Afghan Program began because of the generous, selfless spirit of volunteer Barb Hartnett and her wonderful way of giving back hope to those who needed it most. Diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer herself, she had the power to lift the spirits of others, and by example, give them the hope they needed to continue through trying times and live the best life they could with what had been handed to them. Soon after learning of her own cancer diagnosis, it was revealed that she would become a grandmother and Barb began knitting again. Her return to knitting sparked what would become the root of the Wellwood Resource Centre’s amazing afghan program as she spearheaded an initiative to knit afghans for cancer patients receiving treatment. This program continues today thanks to the efforts of the selfless volunteers who contribute and made donations of their time, materials, and resources. For over 26 years, Wellwood has distributed over 30,000 afghans to those with or affected by a cancer diagnosis. A Wellwood volunteer distributes, on average, 50 afghans a week at Juravinski Cancer Centre. Please join our team of volunteer knitters/crocheters to make squares or a full afghan. Knitting Recommended Square: Cast on 33 stitches (approx. 6.5”) using #7 (4.5 mm) needles with #4 weight or worsted yarn. Crocheting Recommended Square: Any pattern is acceptable, in an approximate size of 6.5” square, using a preferred #4 weight or worsted yarn. Given that everyone’s tension is vastly different, it is extremely helpful to complete a quantity of 35. A recommended full size afghan (not made of squares) is 36” x 48” or 48” x 60”.
