Overview of the position This is an exciting time to join Surrey Hospice Society as we focus on the expansion and delivery of current programs as well as the refinement of a strategic plan. Surrey Hospice is seeking an Executive Director (ED) who will provide direction for and coordinate work and strategies addressing hospice care and grief support. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED is responsible for the effective leadership, strategic oversight, partnership development and overall management of the organization; including financial sustainability and operational excellence. The ED implements the policies, programs and strategies adopted by the Board of Directors and leads staff in strengthening relationships between the community stakeholders, volunteers, and partners.What we are looking forYou value the unique role of hospice and want to make a positive contribution for individuals and their families as they face end‑of‑life.You have experience in partnership development to further the goals of the organization as well as incubating new initiatives with partners and stakeholders.You have experience in organizational leadership, financial acumen, and ability to guide the organization’s activities and outcomes.You are an experienced networker who is equally comfortable networking and partnership development in an online environment and in‑person.You are experienced and competent in compiling and writing government submissions and reports and responding to daily communications.You are flexible, can work to deadlines, have tons of initiative, and like solving problems.Key Responsibilities Leadership, Governance and Community EngagementCollaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and implement a strategic plan, and report on your progress.Deliver a strengthened governance model built on strong organizational policies and procedures that are clear and in line with best practice, operational necessity, and legal and statutory requirements.Provide leadership to staff and volunteers aligned with the organization’s mission and values.Represent the organization publicly and build strong relationships with local stakeholders including donors, healthcare professionals, social workers, and community agencies/partners.Promote public awareness of hospice and palliative care.Financial OversightAnnual budgets and audits are prepared for the financial committee and ready in advance of annual general meetings and/or Board meetings.Ensure accurate financial reporting, oversee audits, and grant funding stipulations.Maintain compliance with funders’ requirements and charitable standards.FundraisingLead effective fundraising campaigns.Develop donor relations and gift giving opportunities.Successfully apply for grant applications.Program Management & DevelopmentOversee, evaluate and improve delivery of hospice and grief support programs based on community needs and best practices.Oversee events, campaigns, and donor recognition.Human ResourcesLead recruitment, supervision, and development of staff and volunteers.Conduct performance reviews and promote staff growth.Review and develop policies to foster a supportive, respectful workplace culture.The ideal candidate hasProven senior leadership experience in a non‑profit, healthcare, or community‑based organization, including working with a board of directors.Excellent communication, interpersonal, and strategic thinking skills.Experience in staff and volunteer management.Strong budgeting, fundraising, and donor relations experience.Knowledge of hospice/palliative care, grief, and end‑of‑life issues.Familiarity with the healthcare system in British Columbia / Canada.Hybrid work: This position has flexible working options with an administration office in Surrey, BC.Remuneration and duration of contract: This is a 1.0 full‑time equivalent (FTE) position on a permanent contract. Contract remuneration is dependent on performance and the availability of funding.
