The Combustion Aerothermal Systems department works on the design and validation of the combustion section of turbofan, turboprop, and turboshaft engines. The internship focuses on CFD prediction and validation of NOx emissions produced by the combustion process in a gas turbine engine. Responsibilities Prepare combustion chamber geometry using ANSYS CAD tools Mesh geometry using ANSYS meshing tools Review NOx prediction models available in open literature and compare them to the models implemented in ANSYS Fluent Perform combustion CFD simulations in ANSYS Fluent with primary focus on predicting NOx produced by the combustion process Review combustor NOx data measured on engines to understand key variables and measurement details Perform CFD simulations with the NOx models available in ANSYS Fluent and compare the predictions to engine data Implement a new NOx model from literature survey in ANSYS Fluent Summarize and present findings Document the findings in a report What You Will Learn Gas turbine engine combustion system components and function Gaseous emissions CFD improvement and validation process Pratt & Whitney Canada’s engine portfolio Teamwork & group dynamics Qualifications Be eligible to work in Canada. Be enrolled in a Canadian university throughout your internship. Be able to work on‑site in the province where you are hired. Master/PhD candidate in Mechanical, Aerospace, Engineering Physics or Chemical Engineering. Proficiency in ANSYS CAD tools (SpaceClaim and/or DesignModeler and/or Discovery). Proficiency in ANSYS mesh generators (Fluent mesher and/or ANSYS Workbench mesher). Proficiency in ANSYS Fluent or other combustion CFD codes such as OpenFOAM. Solid understanding of fluid mechanics, multiphase flows and combustion sciences. Proficiency in programming using C/C++, Python, MATLAB. Assets Exposure to combustion CFD. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
