About the position Parks Canada Jasper, AB$65,216–$81,985 a year – Part-time, Full-time. The Resource Management Officer I (EG-03) delivers technical and analytical services in applied science, monitoring and active management related to a resource management program. Working as part of the Resource Conservation team, the officer plans, monitors, assesses, and restores ecosystem health and functioning. As the Wildfire Risk Reduction Project Officer, the candidate assists the Wildfire Risk Reduction Project Manager in implementing or promoting the 7 FireSmart™ disciplines in Jasper National Park. Duties include conducting geospatial and data analysis, preparing geospatial and technical products to support wildfire risk reduction, education, and communication activities; assisting with project surveillance; ensuring mitigations are used and environmental harms are avoided during fuel management projects; contributing to forestry assessments, treatment area layout, and research for best practices; coordinating with stakeholders; and providing support during prescribed fires and wildfire responses. Conditions of employment: Reliability Status security clearance – all employees of the Federal Government are required to meet Reliability Status. Possession and maintenance of a valid class 5 driver’s license (Class L, N or other graduated licenses will not be accepted). Pre‑placement and periodic medical checks. Standard First Aid Certificate (minimum 40‑hour course) and CPR certificate. Operational Requirements: Completion of the Type 2 wildland firefighter fitness standard. Willing and able to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment. Willing and able to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations, and by various means of transportation. Willing and able to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays when required. Willing and able to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all‑terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non‑motorized vessels) equipment as required. Essential Qualifications (Education and Experience) Education: Completion of a post‑secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. forestry, ecology, natural resources, geography), or a comparable combination of post‑secondary education, training and experience. Experience: Travelling or working in remote mountain wilderness areas. Proficient use of ESRI Arc GIS software. Experience using forestry survey and data/sample collection equipment and diverse means of transportation. Experience in forestry operations. Knowledge: Understanding of specialized technical and scientific equipment operation and maintenance requirements of terrestrial and marine environments, vegetation and wildlife characteristics, and weather conditions specific to Jasper National Park; knowledge of forestry management activities. Abilities: Ability to evaluate forestry operations and mitigate harmful environmental impacts; proficient use of computer applications for database development and maintenance, especially geodatabases; ability to conduct spatial and non‑spatial data analysis using various media and software; data manipulation skills. Asset Qualifications (Optional) Education: Graduate science degree in a related natural science field (e.g. biology, ecology, conservation, forest management, fire science). Experience: Experience in fire behaviour and determining fire regime characteristics of mountain and forest ecosystems. Experience completing multi‑day mountain wilderness trips by foot, bike, ski, boat, all‑terrain vehicle, and horse. Experience in remote field sampling activities over multi‑day research or resource‑management projects. Experience leading or delivering ecological research or monitoring projects. Experience leading or delivering restoration or research projects related to forestry, fire management, restoration, or conservation.
