This position supports environmental programs through monitoring, emergency response and litigation, providing leadership to technologists and maintaining laboratory analytical services. ResponsibilitiesCarry out moderate to highly complex and/or specialty analysis/testing, coordinate workload within the unit/group, and provide leadership to technologists in the preparation and analysis of inorganic pollutants. Implement new/improved methods for sample preparation, analysis and reporting across a variety of parameters. Provide technical services including troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment, workload coordination and monitoring to meet turnaround times. Laboratory expertiseDemonstrated knowledge of inorganic and physical analytical chemistry and related fields, including advanced sample preparation and analytical techniques. Current knowledge of development, commissioning, maintenance, modification and repair of automated analytical laboratory systems and instruments (e.g., microscopes, XRF, XRD, UV‑VIS, ICP‑OES, ICP‑MS, flow analyzers, pH and oxygen meters) and associated software. Experience in laboratory operations to plan daily work and achieve production workload objectives. Knowledge of quality control and assurance principles (ISO/IEC 17025), recorded information management and application software (statistics, spreadsheets, word processing) for performance analysis and quality activities. Communication and interpersonal skillsInterpersonal and mentoring skills to guide junior staff and build effective relationships with colleagues and customers. Effective communication skills to guide technologists, prepare client reports, document methods, train others and present technical findings. Analytical skillsAbility to apply statistics to evaluate viability of new analytical methods. Skill to interpret and evaluate data quality against established criteria or accepted scientific principles. Organizational skills to schedule, prioritize work and manage electronic and hard‑copy records. Computer proficiency and information managementKnowledge of information management systems for laboratory data processing and transmission to clients. Proficiency with data manipulation, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, internet and email. Legislative knowledgeKnowledge of environmental legislation (e.g., Environmental Protection Act, Safe Drinking Water Act) to assess compliance and determine samples that exceed standards. Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations (WHMIS, SDS) and potential workplace hazards.
