Dentons Canada LLP’s Calgary office is seeking a highly motivated Employment and Labour Associate with 3–5 years of post-call experience to join our dynamic and collaborative Employment and Labour group. The opportunity Our Calgary Employment and Labour team advises employers across a wide range of industries on complex workplace issues. This role offers the opportunity to work with experienced lawyers on sophisticated matters while developing a strong, employer‑focused practice within a collaborative and supportive environment. The successful candidate will have experience advising management‑side clients and will bring a solid understanding of how businesses operate, combined with a practical, client‑focused approach to delivering high‑quality legal advice that meets employers’ needs and expectations. The role may also include exposure to occupational health and safety matters, workplace investigations, and regulatory proceedings, depending on the Associate’s experience and interests. You will work closely with colleagues in Calgary and across Canada on matters involving both unionized and non‑unionized workplaces, and will be encouraged to contribute to practice development and client relationships. Responsibilities The Associate’s practice will include advising employers on a broad range of employment, labour, human rights, occupational health and safety and privacy matters, including: Drafting and advising on employment agreements, confidentiality agreements, and restrictive covenants. Advising on employment standards and workplace compliance matters. Developing and reviewing workplace policies and procedures, including alcohol and drug testing, respectful workplace policies, and privacy policies. Representing employers in employment litigation and alternative dispute resolution, including wrongful dismissal, constructive dismissal, and federal unjust dismissal claims. Advising and representing clients in provincial and federal human rights complaints. Advising employers on occupational health and safety matters, including regulatory compliance, incident response, workplace investigations, and defending charges under applicable legislation. Representing employers before labour relations boards and administrative tribunals, including employment standards and labour relations proceedings. Supporting collective bargaining and the administration of collective agreements, including participation in labour arbitrations. Advising on and conducting workplace investigations, including investigations into allegations of harassment, bullying, discrimination, and workplace violence. Advising on workers’ compensation matters and related workplace injury issues. Assisting with unfair competition and post‑employment disputes, including enforcement of restrictive covenants. Advising on privacy issues under applicable provincial and federal legislation. Qualifications 3–5 years of employment and labour experience, gained in private practice or through relevant in‑house legal roles. Experience advising management‑side employers in unionized and/or non‑unionized environments. Member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta (or eligible for transfer). Strong drafting, analytical, and problem‑solving skills. Ability to manage multiple files with competing deadlines. A practical, client‑focused mindset and strong interpersonal skills. Ability to take initiative, work independently, and thrive in a collaborative team environment. Demonstrated commitment to client service. Experience with occupational health and safety matters and/or workplace investigations is considered an asset. This is a replacement position. The target salary range for this position is $150,000 – $195,000, commensurate with the successful candidate’s skills, experience, and qualifications.
