What is the opportunity? Royal Bank of Canada is transforming how developers provision and manage cloud infrastructure at enterprise scale. As Director, Cloud Engineering, you'll lead the strategy, product development, and operations of our enterprise developer platform—a unified interface that abstracts multi‑cloud complexity and accelerates developer productivity. You'll drive a modern, self‑service infrastructure experience while reducing operational friction, establishing golden paths, and fostering a culture of operational excellence. This role combines strategic vision with hands‑on technical leadership—shaping how thousands of developers build, deploy, and manage resources securely, compliantly, and cost‑efficiently across multiple cloud platforms. What will you do? Own the product vision and target‑state architecture for the developer portal and multi‑cloud infrastructure platforms; define convergence roadmaps for resource provisioning workflows, infrastructure lifecycle management, policy enforcement, observability integration, and cost visibility. Establish portal reference architectures, standardized workflows, and curated resource templates that reflect enterprise guardrails; set adoption timelines and drive enterprise‑wide consumption through clear communication and training programs. Govern product roadmap alignment with broader cloud engineering initiatives; prioritize feature delivery balancing developer experience, compliance requirements, operational sustainability, and platform scalability. Direct front‑end and back‑end engineering teams to design and deliver portal features with high usability standards; ensure responsive, accessible interfaces and performant backend orchestration layers. Establish development practices aligned to enterprise standards; implement DevSecOps discipline across the portal codebase with code review, testing protocols, artifact management, and deployment automation. Own backend orchestration architecture that translates portal workflows into infrastructure provisioning actions; ensure reliable, scalable integration with cloud platforms and existing infrastructure systems. Define and monitor portal reliability targets (SLOs/error budgets), observability standards (logs, metrics, traces), and incident response protocols; maintain operational dashboards and runbooks for infrastructure dependencies. Lead 5‑6 Directors/Senior Managers and ~40 indirect reports; establish an engineering collaboration culture rooted in data‑driven decision making, security‑by‑default, automation‑first, and blameless learning. What do you need to succeed? Must have: 8–10+ years leading software engineering teams in regulated enterprise environments; 5+ years in platform engineering, managing senior technical leaders across multi‑product portfolios. Proven delivery of platform reference architectures and lifecycle operations (provisioning, upgrades/patching, security remediation) at scale. Deep expertise with infrastructure‑as‑code, GitOps, and policy‑as‑code approaches; demonstrated ability to design production‑hardened infrastructure solutions. Demonstrated success implementing DevSecOps pipelines at scale with approved repositories, peer review, pre‑production testing, artifact scanning, and automated promotions. Strong grasp of controls and governance; experience with control objectives, operational readiness, tagging strategies, and change management. SRE mindset with focus on operational excellence; experience defining SLOs/error budgets, establishing observability standards, managing incident response, and ensuring disaster recovery readiness. Financial and vendor management experience; ability to drive FinOps optimization, manage budgets and capital expenditures, and engage with vendors at executive level. Exceptional people leadership skills; proven ability to build high‑performing, collaborative engineering cultures; demonstrated success in succession planning, coaching, and talent development. Nice to have: Experience building and scaling internal developer platforms or self‑service infrastructure portals; familiarity with developer experience (DX) principles and UI/UX design considerations. Experience in regulated financial services environments; familiarity with compliance frameworks and governance requirements in highly regulated industries. Certifications in cloud architecture, platform engineering, or policy‑as‑code frameworks. Track record of leading organizational transformation and platform consolidation initiatives; demonstrated ability to navigate complex organizational change. What’s in it for you?
