The successful candidate is expected to report to Markham Elevation Center three times per week at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.About the Role: We are building General Motors’ next‑generation Software‑Defined Vehicle (SDV) infotainment platform, powered by Android Automotive OS. As a Senior Android SystemUI Developer, you will play a key role in shaping the core in‑vehicle user experience across GM’s future vehicle lineup.This role focuses on GM SystemUI development, delivering scalable, testable, safe, and high‑performance infotainment experiences used by millions of drivers. You will work closely with Android/RTOS apps and platform engineers, UX designers, and automotive domain experts to ship production‑quality SystemUI into GM vehicles.What will you do?Design, develop, and maintain GM SystemUI components for Android Automotive OS.Customize and extend SystemUI functionality aligned with General Motors’ SDV strategy.Develop GM SystemUI in close collaboration with GM’s internal design organization, ensuring platform‑level UI behavior aligns with GM’s design direction and award‑winning in‑vehicle user experiences.Integrate GM SystemUI with Android framework and Car Service APIs to enable vehicle‑aware functionality informed by underlying Vehicle HAL/CAN and other signals.Debug complex issues across AOSP, SystemUI, UI framework, and native layers.Participate in Android platform dessert (Pastry) updates, help propagate and forward‑port AOSP modifications across platform versions.Contribute to Initiatives/Capability reviews and influence product decisions.Optimize SystemUI performance, boot time, and memory usage on automotive hardware.Required Qualifications:Extensive experience developing and customizing Android SystemUI.Deep understanding of Android UI framework internals, SystemUI architecture, and system services.5+ years of Android development experience within performance‑driven engineering organizations, with exposure to platform‑level systems.Strong hands‑on experience with AOSP and Android Automotive OS (AAOS).Mandatory experience working in Ubuntu‑based development environments with Jira, GitHub and Figma.Strong proficiency in Java and Kotlin.Experience with Android HMI, XML‑based UI development, RRO, and Jetpack Compose.Experience with Bench & Emulator Testing.Experience with CI/CD pipelines in large‑scale Android or AOSP environments.Experience improving test coverage, code quality metrics, and build reliability.Familiarity with code quality and static analysis tools such as SonarQube.Experience debugging complex system issues.Familiarity with automotive UI Design Systems, UX requirements and safety‑critical UI constraints.Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or a related field.Proven experience using Google Partner Issue Tracker (Buganizer) to report, track, and resolve AOSP and AAOS issues.Preferred Qualifications:Experience working with automotive OEMs would be considered a strong differentiator.Contributions to the AOSP and/or Android Automotive OS (AAOS) codebase, particularly within SystemUI, UI Framework, or platform components, would be considered a strong differentiator.Demonstrated experience filing and resolving Google Partner Issue Tracker (Buganizer) tickets would be considered a strong differentiator.Expertise in large language models (LLMs) and/or AI agents to help drive and evolve the software and tooling stack while maintaining production‑quality standards would be considered a strong differentiator.Experience with Vehicle HAL, Calibration and Car Property APIs.Experience practicing Test‑Driven Development (TDD) and writing unit, integration, and instrumentation tests.Experience with multi‑display and multi‑user automotive systems.Knowledge of Android security model and permissions architecture.Expertise in prototyping and validating new AI‑based solutions that align with platform goals and can be operationalized in production environments.Experience working with Google, Bosch and internal partners to track and resolve platform issues.Experience maintaining or contributing to custom AOSP forks.Prior experience shipping Android Automotive infotainment systems in production vehicles.Compensation: The salary range for this role is $115,000 to $164,600. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position. GM does not provide immigration‑related sponsorship for this role.
