HarperCollins Canada is seeking a Production Editor to support the production editorial process for a wide variety of titles, both fiction and nonfiction, across diverse subjects and voices. Responsibilities Handle production editorial work from manuscript through bound book for various formats, including novels and nonfiction titles. Assess and style manuscripts using proprietary Microsoft Word and Harper’s proprietary software for copyediting, design, and composition. Hire and oversee freelance copy editors and indexers. Collate and process proofreads and slugs in Adobe Acrobat; check all stages of proofs and PDFs for interiors. Copyedit flap and back cover copy and proofread and check all stages of jacket/cover proofs. Work with editors, designers, authors, managing editors, and production managers to anticipate and resolve problems. Evaluate and coordinate artwork as needed. Manage multiple projects while maintaining high quality control standards and meeting strict deadlines, often under tight production schedules. Mark up PDFs for audio recordings. Attend and contribute to online department meetings as needed, collaborating with colleagues from other imprints. Provide backup for the department as needed. Qualifications Minimum of 2 years of prior production editorial work experience; prior experience in trade book publishing strongly preferred. Comfortable with basic computer programs, including Tracked Changes in Word and Adobe Acrobat commenting tools. Solid copyediting and proofreading skills; knowledge of industry standards, including the Chicago Manual of Style. Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to set priorities under pressure. Comfortable working within a digital workflow system. Clear, conscientious, and collaborative communication skills, both verbal and written. College degree or equivalent work experience. The salary range for this position is $51,000‑$56,000. The quoted range represents a good‑faith estimate of what we anticipate the ideal candidate will expect, and we tailor offers within the range based on the selected candidate’s experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other relevant factors.
