Base pay range $97,000.00/yr - $135,000.00/yr About E3 Founded in 1989, Energy + Environmental Economics (E3) is a growing energy consulting firm that helps utilities, regulators, policy makers, developers, and investors make the most educated strategic decisions possible as they implement new public policies, deploy and develop new technologies, and address customers’ shifting expectations. We have offices in San Francisco, New York City, Boston, Denver, and Calgary. E3 works on high-profile, high-impact projects in jurisdictions that lead clean energy policy, including California, Hawaii, and New York. Work The Consultant is a vital contributor to our team and project work. The position assists and/or leads client-facing interactions and helps determine approaches and methods for project tasks. Our consultants direct workstreams within projects and contribute to written reports and papers. They may deliver findings and summaries to customers, make presentations, and respond to questions. Responsibilities may expand to QA/QC, more elaborate investigative tasks, and serving as a technical head on project needs or flagship modeling tools. Responsibilities Develop PLEXOS production simulation (ST) and/or capacity expansion (LT) models addressing client questions and forecasting future market fundamentals over multiple years Strategize modeling approaches and discuss the analysis plan with the PLEXOS modeling team and project leads Gather data from clients and other sources and translate it into accurate model representations Apply QA/QC practices to debug simulation cases, assess results, refine models, and propose additional scenarios Translate simulation results into clear visual representations Modify existing E3 cases and tools to improve functionality and efficiency Assist in delivering customer work through modeling, presentations, and writing subsections of reports and papers Conduct independent research to produce reasonable solutions, sometimes with incomplete information Deliver sections of presentations to customers and respond to questions Track progress against plan with ongoing communication to the Director or Manager Capture project learnings and create repeatable outputs for knowledge management Assist in proposal writing and internal initiatives as needed Requirements 1-3 years of experience using PLEXOS for production simulation (ST) and/or capacity expansion (LT) Master's degree or Ph.D. in engineering, economics, computer science, optimization, public policy or related field 3-5+ years of related experience in an energy-related field Detail-oriented approach to designing models and critically assessing results Experience addressing renewable energy and climate change issues and/or relevant academic project work Hands-on experience or knowledge in one of our Practice Areas: Climate Pathways and Electrification, Asset Valuation, Transmission, and Markets, or Integrated System Planning Collaborative mindset and ability to translate technical concepts to broader audiences Ownership attitude and proactive problem solving Strong writing and communication skills Passion for the transition to a low-carbon economy Strong organizational and time management skills High fluency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint; programming knowledge is valued Desire to work in a dynamic office environment Practice Areas Climate Pathways and Electrification Asset Valuation, Transmission, and Markets Integrated System Planning Benefits Base and bonus commensurate with experience and performance Medical, dental, and vision insurance plans 401(k) with corporate match Flexible Paid Time Off plus standard company holidays Short-term and long-term disability Group life insurance Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts Fitness and wellness discounts and stipend Professional Development annual stipend Hiring Process and Timeline Qualified candidates can expect a phone interview, a technical exercise and associated interview, and a final set of interviews. Compensation Details The total compensation includes base salary and a bonus structure that adds between 15-25% to base pay.
