Senior Specialist, Mechanical Engineer, CAE (L4) – Hamilton, Ontario About The Role Our Mechanical Engineers are responsible for the design of highly complex opto‑mechanical and electromechanical components from concept straight through to production. The role involves advanced engineering assignments, applying specialized knowledge to support the development of state‑of‑the‑art electro‑optical imaging systems. Primary Responsibilities Responsible for mechanical design and analysis of complex opto‑mechanical and electromechanical products from concept through to production using modern CAD and analysis tools. Perform innovation and/or suggest ways to improve our systems and/or reduce cost. Carry out complex and difficult engineering assignments requiring specialized engineering knowledge, often modifying established methods and devising new approaches. Act as a major technical contributor or lead to the completion of project goals and objectives. Contribute to the definition of departmental best practices and design approaches. Receive technical or project‑related guidance and direction, and may act as a lead on larger projects or provide mentorship to staff. Participate in design reviews as either a presenter or a reviewer. Support the verification and validation of new product designs. Keep in synchronization with mechanical industry trends and new technologies relevant to L3 Wescam’s product development. Required Capabilities Proficient user of FEA for static and dynamics analysis of complex assemblies, preferably Ansys. Proficient user of a CFD analysis package, preferably Ansys. Advanced knowledge of a 3D CAD system, preferably SolidWorks. Experience with MATLAB Simulink, Simscape, or an equivalent mathematical application applied to multiphysics simulation and/or digital signal processing. Extensive knowledge of drawing standards and mechanical design standard practice. Well versed in mechanical dynamics and vibration. Well versed in strength of materials and classical analysis methods. Well versed in opto‑mechanical design principles. Well versed in machining, casting, sheet metal, and composites manufacturing techniques and processes. Well versed in rapid prototyping techniques and methods. Well versed in Materials Science. Technical leadership skills. Strong communication skills and the ability to prepare detailed technical reports and specifications. A highly motivated, self‑starter. Ability to learn and grow within a fast‑paced environment. Meets the requirements of the Controlled Goods Registration Program and is eligible for a Canadian government security clearance. Desired Education And Experiences Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience (ideally with 8 years of Mechanical Systems Engineering experience), or Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience, or, in lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience. In the province of Ontario, Canada, the pay range for this position will be $105,000 to $155,000.
