Position Summary BCIT’s School of Energy is seeking a temporary, full‑time (1.0 FTE) Assistant Instructor to join the Department of Electrical Engineering and Technology at the Burnaby campus.The successful candidates will support the delivery of laboratory‑based instruction and applied learning activities within the department. This role focuses on facilitating hands‑on learning, preparing and maintaining laboratory environments, and supporting student success. As part of a team of experienced faculty and technical staff, the successful candidates will bring strong practical skills and a commitment to student learning, contributing to a safe, engaging, and industry‑relevant educational environment.BCIT is a leader in applied, hands‑on education, and we are seeking individuals who are passionate about teaching and mentoring students in a practical learning setting.Duties & Responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to lead learning exercises in electrical laboratories, support course learning objectives, create a positive learning environment for students, participate in department activities, engage with team members, support continuous improvement initiatives within the department, and other duties as specified in the collective agreement.ResponsibilitiesConducting laboratory sessions.Evaluating student performance and providing feedback.Preparing equipment for laboratories.Assisting in the development of new laboratory activities.Performing regular maintenance and upkeep of laboratory facilities and equipment.Arranging for the purchase and/or repair of equipment.QualificationsA Diploma or Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology or equivalent.A minimum of 5 years of recent, practical, and relevant experience.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Demonstrated success as a team player.Effective presentation skills.A proven record of professional development to stay current with new technologies and industry practices and a strong desire to maintain this currency.Good hands‑on skills and experience troubleshooting.Technical Skills Requirement The candidate must demonstrate proficiency in test and measurement techniques and hands‑on laboratory work, including:Proficient use of test and measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, function generators, DC power supplies, multimeters)Ability to identify and resolve breadboard connection issues and basic analog/digital circuit faultsFamiliarity with circuit troubleshooting and debugging techniquesDemonstrated commitment to safety practices, supporting the day‑to‑day organization, setup of laboratory materials, and inventory managementStrong commitment to student mentorship, including clearly explaining technical concepts and assisting students with hands‑on laboratory exercisesAdditional Technical Expertise (one or more areas required)Experience with hardware description languages (e.g., VHDL, Verilog) for digital systemsPractical experience with PCB design tools, soldering/rework, and basic hardware fabricationAnalog electronics.Power electronics.Computer networksAssetsFamiliarity with spectrum analyzers, digital logic analyzers, or RF debugging toolsExperience in a post‑secondary educational environmentIndustry experience supporting electronics manufacturing or testing environmentsBenefits – Why you’d love working with usCompetitive payMinimum of twenty‑five days of vacation (or more, depending on yourposition )Competitive employer‑paid extended health and dental plan – take a look at ourbenefit plans !Defined benefitpensionplan with employer contributionsProfessional Developmentfunds and resourcesAccess to most BCIT Flexible Learningcoursesfree of chargeWellnessand Employee Assistance programsComplimentary membership with free access to the Fitness Centre, Gymnasium, andmoreEligibility requirements apply, benefits may vary depending on the employee group the position belongs to and whether the position offered is temporary or part‑time.
