Natural Resources and Environment Officer ($48,000 - $53,000 per year) Location: 159 Smith Rd, Hantsport, NS B0P 1P0, Canada Job Type: Full-time, 1-year contract (possibility of permanent) About the Role FSC Fishery Management Manage all aspects of the Food, Social and Ceremonial Fishery Respond to community requests and questions regarding the FSC fishery Distribute FSC tags and ensure all required documentation is completed Complete all reporting requirements to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) in accordance with agreements Administration & Operations Oversee departmental procurement and contracting in accordance with GFN Financial Administrative Law Ensure all equipment (e.g., fisheries vehicle, lobster tank) is properly maintained and meets safety standards Staff Management & Development Supervise one staff member, including assigning responsibilities, conducting evaluations, and supporting professional development Develop annual work plans and ensure workplace health and safety compliance Community Engagement & Communication Coordinate community meetings and workshops related to fisheries, natural resources, and environmental issues Prepare and distribute updates and communications to community members Advisory & Representation Keep Chief and Council informed on environmental and natural resource issues at the local, provincial, and national levels Represent Glooscap First Nation at meetings, boards, and external engagements when requested Attend relevant training, workshops, and meetings as required Physical Demands Ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods Ability to travel locally for meetings, site visits, and community engagement Occasional lifting of equipment or materials may be required Manual dexterity required for computer work and field-related tasks Working Conditions Work takes place in an office setting as well as in the community and in the field Regular local travel between meetings, events, and job sites may be required Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for meetings or community events Exposure to outdoor conditions, including weather, may occur during fieldwork Work involves collaboration with community members, leadership, and external partners Requirements A combination of education and experience in a similar supervisory, fisheries, environmental, or natural resources-related role General knowledge of commercial and recreational fisheries is considered an asset Knowledge of Food, Social and Ceremonial (FSC) and Moderate Livelihood Fisheries is considered a strong asset Must have a valid driver’s license and a reliable mode of transportation Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of programs Able to create and deliver presentations to individuals and groups Experience managing budgets and general department finances Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills Ability to work independently and represent the community in a professional manner About the Company The Natural Resources & Environment Officer (NREO) is responsible for the overall management and administration of the Food, Social and Ceremonial (FSC) Fishery for the benefit of all members of Glooscap First Nation. The NREO is responsible for understanding, monitoring, and reporting to Chief and Council and the community on issues related to fisheries, hunting, species at risk, and environmental matters affecting Glooscap First Nation and/or Aboriginal rights.
