Salary: At Wawanesa, salary is only one component of a holistic, comprehensive and competitive offering that we provide to our employees. Job Overview Working with a high degree of autonomy, the Senior Actuarial Consultant is responsible for leading the transformation of critical components of the rating algorithm, a foundational enabler of pricing sophistication. The role includes creating and validating a vision to simplify complex areas of rating logic, taking a national approach, and ensuring an extensible, marketable foundation. Based on that foundation, requirements for rating rules, structures, and manuals are created, soliciting input from multiple areas to develop a sustainable solution. Finally, go‑to‑market rating plans and strategies are created to deliver that solution, aligning with business goals. Throughout this process, the Senior Actuarial Consultant acts as a visionary, collaborator, and executor, championing leading‑edge, quality‑focused process changes. Job Responsibilities Research, extract, and manipulate complex data from relevant sources, and assess data quality. Support the business and overall team by performing analyses/reviews and completing ad‑hoc requests and special projects in a timely manner with minimal support. Evaluate procedures and processes, and recommend alternatives or improvements. Identify opportunities for automation of routine tasks and implementation of advanced techniques while ensuring ethical and responsible application. Develop new approaches to problem solving and assess impacts of solution options with minimal support. Identify emerging industry trends and analyze their impact on Wawanesa. Represent Wawanesa at external events, including universities, actuarial clubs, industry organizations, and charitable causes. Commit to professional development and continuous experiential learning to build cross‑functional knowledge, technical skills, and mastery of competencies. Focus learning activities on bringing new knowledge and skills to the team to address existing gaps. Provide regular project updates to stakeholders and anticipate obstacles proactively. Lead projects from beginning to end, including implementation of the final product and, where appropriate, training and documentation. Contribute to the mentorship, training, and development of actuarial analysts. Provide feedback, instruction, and development guidance to help others excel in their responsibilities. Build trust and credibility with peers and develop strong working relationships across teams. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline. More than four years of actuarial experience an asset. Seven CAS exams or an ACAS designation an asset. Advanced oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey business terminology and insights that are meaningful and well‑received. Ability to clearly document major projects and key processes. Effectively communicate analysis, results, and recommendations to senior leaders, influencing direct leaders to accept recommendations. Discuss ideas in terms familiar to colleagues in different functional areas and teach necessary actuarial concepts when needed. Proficiency with Excel, SQL, R, Python, and/or other related software/programming languages/actuarial software. Ability to adapt quickly to new enterprise system environments. Ability to identify areas for improved efficiency and suggest solutions. Advanced knowledge of actuarial science, mathematics, probability, statistics, finance principles, and the ability to apply this knowledge to insurance problems. Ability to develop efficient and viable solutions to problems and assess impacts of these options. Strong attention to detail when performing analysis with minimal technical errors. Ability to identify errors and areas of concern that may significantly impact analysis. Ability to peer‑review through reasonableness checks. Ability to balance materiality, efficiency, accuracy, and detail. Ability to prioritize and complete multiple concurrent assignments, both individually and as a group leader, in a timely manner while proactively keeping leaders informed of progress. Ability to work efficiently and cooperatively in a team environment. Keeps abreast of current industry and professional standards and applies them directly to decisions.
