The plant is self‑sufficient on energy from Deer Lake Power Generation, Steam Power and Steam Recovery and aims to be fully reliant on clean energy. Overview The Improvement Engineer is a development role for recent graduates of a recognised engineering program. Successful candidates will engage in projects that positively impact the efficiency and sustainability of various business areas. The role is based primarily in the Technical Services, Engineering, Maintenance or Production departments but may rotate. The position is entry‑level and is designed to develop skills in teamwork, leading teams, lean manufacturing tools and union relations, with future opportunities in operations leadership, reliability, planning, maintenance, etc. Examples of Projects Design, install and programme Variable Frequency Drives Develop upgrading plans for critical communication and control equipment Design and install compressed air systems Execute energy‑reduction projects to lower the mill’s electrical demand and boiler fuel needs Implement management‑of‑change protocols in project executions Modify piping or design of thermal mechanical pulping water systems Optimize pumps to reduce equipment damage and improve energy efficiency Optimise paper machine chemical retention aid application from delivery through product performance Review, update and implement safety systems Qualifications Completed a recognised engineering program between May 2023 and May 2025. Preference will be given to electrical and mechanical engineering degrees, but other disciplines are welcome. A passion for continuous improvement and a curiosity to develop creative solutions. Interest in working with a large manufacturer in Newfoundland and Labrador, with growth potential across Canada. Willingness to acquire knowledge and training in specialized areas such as Lean Six Sigma, Root Cause Analysis. Proficiency in Excel or other data‑management software (e.g., PI, Envoy). Responsibilities Determine value associated with solving problems that close the budget‑vs‑actual gap. Use lean principles to develop action plans that close operational gaps, including Develop measurements and analyse process parameters. Facilitate continuous‑improvement activities such as Kaizens, brainstorming and troubleshooting. Work closely with various departments to implement improvements. Develop measures and checks to ensure gains are sustained. Assist or lead the development/design of capital projects or other initiatives when required. Ensure all documentation related to projects is completed to maximise tax‑credit eligibility. Provide data analysis and reporting as required.
