Non-profit Board Position Role: Board Chair Type: non-profit board / unpaid Organization: Let's Hike T.O. Location: Toronto/GTA ON. Virtual and In-person. Candidates should live in the GTA. Let's Hike T.O. is a registered non-profit organization with the mission to diversify hiking communities through easy access to safe and enjoyable hikes for anyone, with a special focus on actively engaging people of colour, newcomers and young adults. We strongly believe in equity, diversity, and inclusion and try to ensure that our hikes reflect that in every way. Founded in July 2021, since then we have led over 300+ hikes and had 4,000+ people come hiking with us. Our extended volunteer community has 40+ active members. We are a 100% volunteer-run organization so the board plays both a strategic and operational role. This role is a Board position and will work with our team of volunteer board members to guide all aspects of the organization. The Board Chair is an approachable and organized coordinator who oversees volunteers with a balance of guidance and respect. They communicate clearly and effectively, making sure expectations are understood while also listening to feedback. Rather than pushing too hard, they motivate through encouragement and appreciation, ensuring volunteers feel valued and supported. They are mindful of people's workloads and personal commitments, creating an environment where volunteers can contribute meaningfully without feeling overwhelmed. This Role Is Perfect For Someone Who Is passionate about diversity and the outdoors Is a natural at running meetings and ensuring equal participation Enjoys collaborating and building consensus Is highly organized, a strategic thinker, and able to deeply identify with our mission Understands how boards work, grasps the role of the Board Chair well, and has been on a board before Effective communicator Key Responsibilities Lead board meetings effectively and impartially Set the agenda in collaboration with the Board Support strategic planning and monitor progress toward organizational goals Ensure all board members are actively engaged and informed Facilitate healthy discussions and manage differing opinions Support the board and volunteers in their roles Handle recruitment and training of board members (once a year) Problem solve organizational challenges as they arise Co-plan volunteer appreciation events Provide opportunities for volunteers to feel cared for and appreciated Act as a positive representative of Let's Hike T.O. and role model at all times Act as a public face of the board when appropriate Time Commitment This role requires 8-10 hours a month plus one monthly virtual board meeting held one day per month from 7 - 8:30pm (TBD). The commitment is for remainder of 2026, with potential for 2027 year comitment. Expectations Of All Board Members Assist in strategic oversight of the organization and its financial condition Attend, prepare for, and actively participate in the monthly board meetings, with a maximum of two absences allowed per year, provided advance notice is given Attend volunteer recognition events plus at least two hikes Act as a positive representative of Let's Hike T.O. and a role model at all times Training Required For New Board Members In-person half day of board training Reading the Let's Hike T.O.
